Filming on Lakes and Rivers

When planning filming activities around water bodies in the Yukon, please be aware that specific provisions under the Federal Fisheries Act may apply. If proposed activities involve the physical modification of the bed or banks of water bodies (still waters) or courses (flowing waters), the removal of vegetation from adjacent to or around the perimeter of water bodies or courses (for example to provide access), the construction of temporary or permanent structures in or immediately adjacent to water bodies or courses, the withdrawal (mechanical pumping) of water from, or the use of explosive devices in or near water bodies or courses, we recommend that you consult with Fisheries and Oceans Canada in Whitehorse at (867) 393-6715.

Streets & Highways

When filming on streets, municipal authorities should be contacted if there will be any disruption of traffic flow. In smaller communities, this is usually done through the RCMP. In Whitehorse, you can arrange for the local City of Whitehorse By-Law Enforcement Office to help your production with traffic control. Road closures of varying durations can be accommodated on Yukon highways, due to low traffic flow. Production assistants can be used for traffic control.

Firearms & Explosives

Explosives are regulated in Canada by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. In the Yukon, blasting tickets are administered by the Chief of Mine Safety, in the Occupational Health and Safety Branch of the Workers’ Compensation Board. Before buying explosives in the Yukon, you must have a Purchase and Possession Permit. This permit can be filled out where one buys explosives but must be verified by the local RCMP. Permits are usually verified immediately.
